Comments: The first placemat I designed is a yarn one, and I had so much fun that soon others (made in thread) will arrive..

Size : 13.5 inches diameter (35 cm)

Material : Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn ( we call it "Poor Cotton", but a yarn like "Sugar&Cream" should be good), color A=green, B=Red, C=White, Hook no.4 (US=G/6)

Stitches : ch, sl st, dc, tr, trcl=2-tr cluster = 2 tr crocheted in same st and closed together

Difficulty: easy/medium

Start with A, 10 ch

1. 24 tr in lp; join with sl st to first st.

2. *dc in next tr, 3 ch, sk a tr* Repeat * to * 12 times, join B with sl st in starting st.

3. *(trcl, 2 ch, trcl) in next sp, 2 ch* Repeat * to * 12 times, join A with sl st in starting st.

4. sl st to 2-ch sp,* 3 dc in 2-ch sp between clusters, 3 tr in next sp* Repeat * to * 12 times, join C with sl st in starting st. =>72 sts

5. *(dc on next dc) 3 times, dc between last dc of prev grp and first tr of next grp, (dc on next tr) 3 t , dc between last tr of prev grp and first dc of next grp * Repeat * to * 12 times, join B with sl st in starting st. =>96 dc

6. *(dc in next dc ) 5 times, 2 dc in next dc* Repeat * to * 16 times, join A with sl st in starting st. =>112 dc

7.*(dc in next dc)3 times, 2 dc in next dc*;Repeat * to * 28 times, join C with sl st in starting st. =>140 dc

8. *(trcl, 5 ch, trcl) in next dc, sk 6 dc* ; Repeat * to * 20 times, join B with sl st in starting st.

9. sl st in sp, *(3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) in 5 ch sp, 2 ch*; Repeat * to * 20 times, join A with sl st in starting st.

10. *(sc on next dc) 3 times, 3 sc in next sp, (sc in next dc) 3 times, elongated sc between corresp two clusters in Row 8, taking in the sc also the 2-ch sp below in row 9*; Repeat * to * 20 times, join with sl st in starting st. Cut A.

11. Join C in central sc of a fan, *(trcl, 7 ch, trcl) on central sc of next fan;*; Repeat * to * 20 times, join B with sl st in starting st.

12 sl st in sp, *(4 dc, 3 ch, 4 dc) in 7 ch sp, 2 ch*; Repeat * to * 20 times, join A with sl st in starting st.

13. *(sc on next dc) 4 times, 4 sc in next sp, (sc in next dc) 4 times, elongated sc between corresp two clusters in Row 11, taking in the sc also the 2-ch sp below in row 10*; Repeat * to * 20 times, join A with sl st in starting st.

14. sc on ea sc all around. Cut thread, weave in ends.

N.B.

• Always substitute (also if not explicitly said) first st in a row as follows:
  • first sc with 1 ch, sc;
  • first hdc with 2 ch;
  • first dc with 3 ch;
  • first tr with 4 ch...and so on;
• When you read "sl st to <location>", where the location is not immediately contiguous to last st, this means of course "an appropriate number of sl sts for reaching <location>".
• Also if I do not specify it, if you lasted prev row on a st (say st1), while you must start next row in another st (say st2), make an appropriate number of sl sts to reach st2.
