Potholder

Comments: This multicolored potholder is crocheted in Italian flag colors, hence the name; of course, you can use whatever combination you like!

TIP: If you want to use effectively this item as potholder, I suggest you to crochet a back piece of the same dimensions, using a unique color and all dc rows, put a folding tissue between the two pieces, and join them with a sc junction (sc inserting hook in both pieces all around it).

Size : 19 x 18 cm = 7.5 x 7 inches

Material : Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn ( we call it "Poor Cotton", but a yarn like "Sugar&Cream should be good), color A= Red, B=Green, C=White. Hook no.4 (US=G/6)

Stitches :ch, sl st, sc, dc

Difficulty:medium

Directions

Start with A, do 44 ch.

1. sc in 2nd ch and in every other ch; 2 ch, turn =>43 sc

2. 3 dc, *1 ch, sk a st, 3 dc* ; Repeat all the row , joining B at the last dc ; do not cut A , leave A thread here; 2 ch, turn =>33 dc.

3.*3 dc worked in ch sp, 1 ch* ; Repeat all the row , joining C at the last dc ; do not cut B , leave B thread here; 2 ch, turn.

4.*3 dc worked 2nd dc of 3-dc grp in row 2, 1 ch* ; Repeat all the row , joining A at the last dc (tale the thread left at Row 2) ; leave C thread here; 2 ch, turn.

5-25.Repeat ever Row 4 , changing color at ea Row (at the end of each Row leave the color just used without cutting it, take it again 2 Rows after)

At Row 23, cut A and fix it; at Row 24 cut B and fix it. At the end of Row 25, do not cut C, but work border as following:

a) With C, sc in ea st and sc in ea sp. In the first corner, (sc, 8 ch, sc) in corner sc; work scs evenly on vertical sides and on base chs, making 3 scs in ea of remaining three corners.Join B in last sc, cut C.

b) sc in ea sc all around, 3 sc in simple corners, sc in ea ch of the hole. Cut B, weave in all ends.

N.B.

Always substitute (also if not explicitly said) first st in a row as follows:
- first sc with 1 ch, sc;
- first hdc with 2 ch;
- first dc with 3 ch;
- first tr with 4 ch...and so on;
When you read "sl st to <location>", where the location is not immediately contiguous to last st, this means of course "an appropriate number of sl sts for reaching <location>".
Also if I do not specify it, if you lasted prev row on a st (say st1), while you must start next row in another st (say st2), make an appropriate number of sl sts to reach st2.
