This doily incorporates three classic motifs in crochet, wheat, corn and scarabs. If you crochet it with a thicker thread, like#10, it will be a nearly "regular-size" doily. The light"ruffled effect" at the end is wanted, but if you prefer perfectly flat doilies, you can substitute 5 ch arcs, from row 10 on , with 4 ch. The structure is a little bit elaborate, but the stitches are all very simple...so do not be discouraged with instructions :)

Size : 25 cm (10 inches) diameter

Material : Pearl cotton # 8, hook 1.1 mm (US steel #10);you can substitute with Cebelia #20 or equivalent cordonnet thread(but the gauge can slightly vary)

Stitches : ch, sl st, sc, dc, tr, dtr (double triple),picot = 3 ch, sl st in first ch.

Directions

Start with 8 ch, join with sl st

1. 24 dc in lp, join with sl st to first st.

2. * (dc, 3 ch, dc) in next st, sk 2 dc *; Repeat *to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st.

3. sl st to first sp, 4 dc in sp, (3 ch, 4 dc in next st) 7 times, 3 ch, join with sl st to first st.

4. * 4 dc closed tog on 4 dc, 2 ch, (dc, 3 ch, dc) in next sp, 2 ch *; Repeat * to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st.

5. * dc on dc cluster, 2 ch, (4 dc, 3 ch, 4 dc) in next sp, 2 ch *; Repeat * to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st.

6. * dc on dc, 2 ch, 3 dc closed tog on next 3 dc, sk dc, (4 dc, 3 ch, 4 dc) in next sp, sk dc, 3 dc closed tog on next 3 dc, 2 ch *; Repeat * to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st.

7. * (tr, 3 ch, tr) on dc, 2 ch, 3 dc closed tog on next 3 dc, sk dc, (4 dc, 3 ch, 4 dc) in next sp, sk dc, 3 dc closed tog on next 3 dc, 2 ch *; Repeat * to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st.

8. * tr on tr, 3 ch, tr in next sp, 3 ch, tr on next tr, 2 ch, 3 dc closed tog on next 3 dc, 2 ch, sk dc, 3 dc in next sp, 2 ch, sk dc, 3 dc closed tog on next 3 dc, 2 ch *; Repeat* to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st.

9. sl st to next 3-ch sp, * (sc in next sp, 5 ch) 4 times, 3 dc closed tog on next 3 dc, 5 ch *; Repeat * to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st, cut thread.

10. Join thread in any 3-dc cluster, * dc on dc, 5 ch,(sc in next sp, 5 ch) twice, 4 dc in next sp, 5 ch (sc in next sp, 5 ch) twice * ;Repeat * to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st.

11. * dc on dc, 5 ch, (sc in next sp, 5 ch) twice, 4 dc in next sp, (dc on next dc) 4 times, 4 dc in next sp, 5 ch,(sc in next sp, 5 ch) twice *; Repeat * to * 7 times more, join with sl st to first st.

N.B.

Always substitute (also if not explicitly said) first st in a row as follows:
- first sc with 1 ch, sc;
- first hdc with 2 ch;
- first dc with 3 ch;
- first tr with 4 ch...and so on;
When you read "sl st to <location>", where the location is not immediately contiguous to last st, this means of course "an appropriate number of sl sts for reaching <location>".
Also if I do not specify it, if you lasted prev row on a st (say st1), while you must start next row in another st (say st2), make an appropriate number of sl sts to reach st2.
