Square motif

Size : 14 x 14 cm (5.5 x 5.5 inches)

Material : Pearl cotton # 5, hook 1.9 mm (Boye steel #5) ; you can substitute with Cebelia #10 or equivalent cordonnet thread (but the gauge can slightly vary)

Stitches : ch, sl st, sc, dc, dtr

Difficulty: medium/difficult

Directions

1. *13 ch , in 12th ch from hook do 3 dtr closed together*; Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st.

2. sl st in 12 ch loop, *12 sc in 12 ch lp, 1 sc in 1 ch lp *; Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st.

3. 3 sl st, * + 1 sc in next st, 13 ch + ; Repeat from + to + 4 times more; 1 sc in next st, 7 ch, sk 4 st, 3 sc * ; Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st.

4. sl sts to center of first lp, * 3 sc in lp, 5 ch, +3 sc in next lp, 3 ch + ; Repeat from + to + once; 3 sc in next lp, 5 ch, 3 sc in next lp, 7 ch *; Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st.

5. sl sts to center of first lp, *+ 1 sc in lp, 5 ch + Repeat from + to + in next two lps; 1 sc in next lp, 8 ch, 1 sc in 7-ch lp, 8 ch *; Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st.

6. *+ 1 hdc on sc, 5 hdc in next lp + ; Repeat from + to + twice more; in each one of next two lps work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 5 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) *; Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st.

7. *+ 1 sc on hdc; 5 ch; sk 5 st; + ; Repeat from + to + twice more; 1 sc on next hdc, 5 ch, sk 2 st, 1 sc on 3rd dc, 14 ch , sk 8 st, 1 sc on 3rd ch, 5 ch, sk 4 st*; Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st.

8. *+ in next lp work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc)+; Repeat from + to + 3 times more; in next lp work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 13 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc); Repeat from + to + once; * Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st;

9. sl sts to 2nd dc, *+ (1 sc, 5 ch, 1 sc) in 2nd dc, 4 ch + ; Repeat from + to + 3 times more; sk 6 sts, sc in each of next 5 sts, (1 sc, 9 ch, 1 sc) in next st; sc in each of next 5 sts, 4 ch, sk 6 sts; Repeat from + to + once; * Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st; cut thread, weave in ends.

N.B.

Always substitute (also if not explicitly said) first st in a row as follows:
- first sc with 1 ch, sc;
- first hdc with 2 ch;
- first dc with 3 ch;
- first tr with 4 ch...and so on;
When you read "sl st to <location>", where the location is not immediately contiguous to last st, this means of course "an appropriate number of sl sts for reaching <location>".
Also if I do not specify it, if you lasted prev row on a st (say st1), while you must start next row in another st (say st2), make an appropriate number of sl sts to reach st2.
