Motif / Coaster

Octagonal motif that can be used alone as a coaster (perhaps with a thicker thread?).

Size : 11 cm (4 inches) diameter

Material: Pearl cotton # 8, hook 1.25 mm (Bates steel #9); you can substitute with Cebelia #20 or equivalent cordonnet thread (but the gauge can slightly vary)

Stitches : ch, sl st, sc, dc, tr.

Difficulty: medium

Directions

Start with 10 ch, join

1. 24 dc in lp ; join with sl st in first st.

2. * sc, 4 ch, sk 2 sc *; Repeat * to * 7 times more; join with sl st in first st.

3. * (3 dc, ch, 3 dc) in next sp *; Repeat * to * 7 times more; join with sl st in first st.

4.* (dc in next dc) 3 times, 2 ch, (dc in next dc) 3 times, 1 ch*; Repeat * to * 7 times more; join with sl st in first st.

5. *(dc in next dc) 6 times, 5 ch*; Repeat * to * 7 times more; join with sl st in first st.

6. *(dc in next dc) 6 times, 5 ch, sc in next sp, 5 ch*; Repeat * to * 7 times more; join with sl st in first st.

7.*6 tr closed tog on 6 dc, (5 ch, 1 sc in next 5-ch sp) twice, 5 ch*; Repeat * to * 7 times more; join with sl st in first st.

8. *dc on tr cluster, (7 ch, dc on sc) twice, 7 ch*; Repeat * to * 7 times more; join with sl st in first st.

9.* dc on dc, 7 ch* ; Repeat * to * around; join with sl st in first st. Cut thread.

N.B.

Always substitute (also if not explicitly said) first st in a row as follows:
- first sc with 1 ch, sc;
- first hdc with 2 ch;
- first dc with 3 ch;
- first tr with 4 ch ... and so on;
When you read "sl st to <location>", where the location is not immediately contiguous to last st, this means of course "an appropriate number of sl sts for reaching <location>".
